This year’s Joint Meeting of AES, ASIH, HL, and SSAR in Chattanooga is extra special for all of us at Johns Hopkins University Press. We are trying to make stars of scientists by hosting book signings that have special significance for each society. For the herpetologists, we are showcasing the new and definitive book by Dave Rostal, Earl McCoy, and Henry Mushinsky: Biology and Conservation of North American Tortoises. Dave and Henry will be on hand to sign the book, and many of the chapter authors are expected to be lingering nearby.
For shark biologists, both Gene Helfman and George Burgess will be on hand to sign copies of their truly impressive book, Sharks: The Animal Answer Guide. In many ways the book is an update and extension of Vic Springer’s classic, Sharks in Question. Vic himself recently complimented Helfman and Burgess’s book, saying “This is very nice,” and adding, “It’s about time someone did this!”
And for the ichthyologists, some great news: the first of the three volumes of Freshwater Fishes of North America is finally out (thanks to the relentless efforts of Mel Warren and Brooks Burr and their army of chapter authors). The book is an incredible synthesis and is filled with Joe Tomelleri illustrations, each a masterpiece. Copies with all three of their signatures are available, but quantities are limited.
We at Johns Hopkins University Press are making a deep commitment to publishing great books on amphibians, elasmobranchs, fish, and reptiles, and we want to talk to you about books you might be interested in writing or books you think we should pursue. Stop by, please, look through the many great books in our booth, meet our authors, and chat with science editor Vince Burke. Thanks!
